Extremists on the far right and left are the #1 danger to the US outside of the occasional foreign enemy. At the fringes right and left become one, both totalitarian and enemies of freedom. Hopefully radicals will never seize power in the US but at present the right-wing has an unusual imbalance of power. This is due mostly to the 9-11 phenomenon after which citizens hesitated to question their leaders but went along with the party in charge.

Despite the claims of the right-wing, there are very few
leftists in any power positions in the US. Democrats are not leftists, though they are perhaps to the left of center. At the center democrats and Republicans become almost equal. That is why I have no problem if my man Kerry runs with someone like McCain. But I do have a big problem when Bush ignores the voices of the middle and institutes the prejudices of the far right.

What we need is a progressive middle, not just status quo but forward-looking. Bush is giving us a trillion+ deficit right before Baby Boomers start retiring and drawing down SS and Medicare. Talk about UN-forward looking. It's just reckless and leaves the problem for the next administration(s). Also on the environment and energy. Addicted to oil and trying to keep us that way when if we invested and moved now we could largely replace oil within 10 years. These are anormous issues and wrong moves now will cost us all as time goes by.

Moderate = uncommitted to ones core beliefs and/or lacking same core beliefs

Moderate means that ones core beliefs do not come from the fringe of society. They are usually just as firmly held.
