That's a great idea! Tax incentives are a good way for the government to engineer social change. Speaking of taxes, higher taxes on gasoline would certainly cause more people to shift to higher gas milage hybrids and fuel cell cars. Either, tax breaks or tax hikes can be used to bring about a desired change in behavior.

I bet this current Middle Eastern crisis with the high gas prices that it is causing is in a backhanded way giving hybrids a boost at car dealerships. Certainly, people are more aware of issues like fuel efficiency at times of heightened oil prices like we're experiencing now.

In case anyone is too concerned about the cost of gasoline in the U.S. these days. I paid $6.00 per gallon for gasoline when I was in England a few months back. That's their normal price. Britain taxes gasoline at a very high rate. Imagine $6.00 per gallon gasoline in the U.S.? That would really cause a shock to our economy and way of life.
