>When I was 22 and my roommate was a 36-year old conservative, I simply could not understand his perspective. One of my favorites was, "I can't support capital punishment unless I would be willing to pull the switch myself". He would always say, "Don't sweat it; I'll be glad to pull the switch any time...."

>Today, when I see a David Westerfield, I realize that it would be sheer joy for me to be able to pull the switch on him.

These are changes in opinion, and not in actual knowledge. I believed in the death penalty until a year or so ago when the statistics that changed the mind of the governor of Illinois were released... the chances of executing someone innocent are just too high.

Now, you'd disagree with me, but I wouldn't say you're less intelligent, you just place a different value on or don't believe those same statistics.

That's more or less the way it is with most political issues, IMO.

As people grow older, those who are fairly bright tend toward conservatism because they come to understand that liberalism doesn't work.

Do you make these things up as you go along? There is little, if any, correlation between smarts and your ideology.

I know old conservatives who are as dumb as a door knob. And I know old liberals who are brilliant. Most people who grow conservative as they age do so because they are afraid of losing all they've gained. What they perceive as the "socialistic nature" to be found in liberalism terrifies them. They are afraid they might lose everything.

But it goes beyond that......conservatives stand for tradition while liberals want to move into the future.

So stop with your attempts to make a conservative/intelligence association so that it fits the neat little package you've made for yourself.

Besides, it doesn't matter how smart you are.......its what you do with those smarts that counts.

Its also true that as people get older, they get more flatulent.

I don't think growing more flatulent and conservative as one gets older is necessarily a good thing.
