3G launch likely to be delayed until 2004

04/03/2003

TMN, the mobile unit of Portugal Telecom, said last Friday that the launch of the company's third-generation (3G) network is likely to be delayed until 2004.

Portuguese 3G licence holders originally had to launch services in 2002, but the launch date was subsequently pushed back by the government to the end of 2003.

Speaking to reporters, TMN President Iriarte Esteves stated that he expected a six- to twelve-month delay to TMN's commercial launch of 3G due to a lack of next-generation handsets. Esteves said that one handset manufacturer had told TMN that it would not be able to supply 3G terminals until 2005.
