A quick look at a map says to me that Beijing is closer than Alaska but I don't have the hard mileage. It is still my claim that there is no evidence that these missiles are capable of being nuclear armed. The NK conversation in the world would be very different right now if the world seriously thought NK has long range nukes or soon wood. The world is willing to give up Seoul but ....

I have trouble believing the reality of the story, UN-less you have the UN inspectors up in Alaska too, UN-less there is a need for a casus-belli.

+ the snow, the size.

Gold is easier to find up there. Or oil, if one wants THAT oil of course!

Fellow threadsters: I'd like you to know that Paul and I have had a running exchange of numerous friendly PM's since last weekend. I do not want anyone to think there is bad blood between us. Paul is a considerate, brave, and responsible person and I've been watching his contributions on various web sites and forums here for a couple of years.

Well done.

<<Thanks Paul. Does this put Beijing within range too?>>

I just did a measure on my world map and if they can hit Alaska, most of China and even part of India is in range.

Since we're goin touchy feely here I too would like to comment that I feel paul philps has much to contribute here and has a fine mind. My altercation with him was born of his obstreperous post wherein he chose to address JohnM as "you son of a bitch". Assuming we're all past this and have learned from the collision I too would like to welcome paul back.

Ken,

Thank you for the kind words. It never occurred to me that there might be a strain between us so I am glad that you clarified that publicly. In my research for a RTW essay on blogging technology and the future of the Web I ran across an interesting study of Internet Discussion Forums. The bottom line is that, for a number of reasons, they are a horrible tool for collaboration. Works well for exchanging information but not for developing ideas and new knowledge.

The symptoms described in the study matched my frustrations on FADG quite closely. Much to my chagrin, I was forced to admit that I was asking the tool to do something beyond it's design. Darn, I was so much happier when I thought it was all just the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy. ;-)

I will be lurking and I will chirp in now and then but I will use the 'quiet space' of my small board to try and work out new ideas. I will skip the back and forth of the US domestic politics debate. Been there, done that, sucked at it.

I apologize to the all the members of the FADG board for my various outbursts. Unacceptable. I am a now a ranter in recovery.
