Gartner Survey Indicates Almost Half of CRM Software Goes Unused

On March 3, 2003, Gartner will release the results of a survey of enterprises implementing CRM applications. In a preview of the survey results, however, Gartner has already indicated that some 41.9 percent of the total number of software licenses bought by survey respondents went unused. The analyst firm cites confusion between calculating benefits and ROI as one of the major causes.

The report also indicates that, through 2005, enterprises that continue to buy more CRM software licenses than they need (and that deploy less than they purchase) will incur a 20- to 30-percent increase in total cost of ownership compared to enterprises that carefully plan their CRM software license purchases.

What's the solution? For starters, Gartner recommends that enterprises be careful to apply reasonable assumptions of future benefits. If the assumptions supporting these benfits change, the benefits must also be reevaluated. For more details, go to: www4.gartner.com
