CAMBRIDGE, England -- An Intel-sponsored laboratory for up to 50 researchers is to due to be opened at the university's West Cambridge campus on Thursday (6 March 2003).

The Intel lab is to be housed within the William Gates Computer Laboratory, an award winning building that opened in September 2001.

The laboratory is intended to allow university and Intel researchers to collaborate on open research projects in the fields of computers and communication. The research would focus on new networking systems and software development technologies, the university said.

Intel Research Cambridge will provide facilities in the William Gates Building for around 50 researchers, made up of Intel staff and an equal number of university staff, students and visiting researchers. The lab is to be under the directorship of Derek McAuley, an affiliated lecturer at the Computer Department and founding member of the Marconi and Microsoft research labs in Cambridge.
