To me, the dull somewhat leveled-off market behavior means we can look forward to more economic doldrums in the future, although perhaps no economic crisis that some maxi-bears are predicting.

It seems to me that we've cleared the maxi-bear worst case scenarios. Sadly, I've read that the Japanese economy didn't trully start collapsing until two years into the recession... The more realistic scenario is a small downward correction from here (target 6000-7000) followed by a prolonged hibernation a la 1970's, with stock prices remaining flat....
