Given the record so far, why should we expect that the war and the occupation will go smoothly?

Read History on a day to day basis, then look at it from a distance. Day to day, it looks like total chaos, from a distance, smooth. I happen to be reading a Historical Novel about the Invasion of the Philippines in 1942 at the moment. Looking back on it now, we see the disaster. Day to day, no one saw it.

To sum up, nothing goes "smoothly" short term. And ya gotta remember, you are looking at it from the viewpoint of a person who did not believe it would ever happen, and was, and still is, opposed to it happening. That does make a difference.
