BEIJING, March 5 (Reuters) - Canadian telecoms equipment vendor Nortel Networks Corp (Toronto:NT.TO - News; NYSE:NT - News) said on Wednesday it has signed a $36 million deal to expand China Mobile Communications Corp's network in northern China.

The upgrade would increase the capacity of China Mobile, parent of China Mobile (Hong Kong) Ltd (HKSE:0941.HK - News; NYSE:CHA - News), by 1.8 million subscribers, it said in a statement.

The expansion would allow China Mobile, the country's biggest mobile carrier, to offer faster and more data-rich GPRS services in the northern province of Hebei.

Nortel, battered by a worldwide spending slump from operators, said it has deployed wireless networks in 17 of China's 31 provinces.
