You can always go deeper in the middle, it's your project so you can do it any way you wish. Plus you do need a heater if you wish to keep fish over the winter. It can plug into the same receptacle the pump runs on since you need to pull the pump before ice up. The heaters are about a foot across and stay at about 40 degrees. Just enough to keep a hole open.

You may need to get some dirt to mix with that sand. Most of the plants used are bog plants and I've never seen a sandy bog. You could probably do a 50/50 mix as the plants will also be feeding hydrophonicly. Or just go with potted plants and all sand and rock.

It's 15 here now and we had about an inch of snow last night. More like little frozen beads than flakes and it's blowing now. Gives you face a power sanding when you go out.
