They need to save him as political scapegoat. He was only doing what the public and the politicians wanted, which was to pump endless credit and to paint a rosy picture on the state of things. Very few people would've considered his actions to be potentially harmful at the time. It's all self-interest really. Most people don't blame him for what happened prior to his raising the interest rates in 99/2000.
