I recall a stat that said that pre-"closer" days, the team leading going into the eigth and/or ninth inning won a greater percent of the time than since the "closer" role has become en vogue (one of the reasons more teams are going by "closer by committee...it just doesn't pay to pay a closer special money) - in fact, the Sox hired Bill James (Baseball Abstract fame) to be a consultant...and it's his imprint on the fact that Sox dont have a closer

Clemens is not 'haunting' the Sox. if we had Clemens we would NOT have Pedro (we would have never at the time we traded for/signed Pedro had the money to swing both on the roster) and i think we can all agree on which one we'd rather have. Clemens probably will win 15 games this year, but it will only be because he plays on a Yankees team that will win 90-95 games.

as far as the "closer" thing, i and others have written on this extensively so i am not going to belabor the point any more. "closers" are a categorically ridiculous concept; the view of their 'value' is akin to people who thought the Nas should be bought at 5000. for like 3-4 guys (Rivera in his prime, though likely not now; Trevor Hoffman; maybe Rob Nenn; and John Smoltz) it makes sense to have a 'closer'; otherwise you're just as well to mix and match situationally. 'closers' exist so managers don't have to make hard decisions and face the angry mobs on talk radio the next day if their decision goes wrong, and so guys who don't really pitch that well (like Oogie) can get 2nd-starter money. the Sox bullpen will be MUCH better this year, though we'll have to wait til the end of the year to see if i'm right or not.

as far as Nixon goes, just wait. and frankly, if he DOESN'T perform like i think he will, we've got plenty of bats (Ortiz most likely) to take his place.

Cheers
