<<What, did the guys freezing Teddy Ballgame get him re-animated or cloned or something?>>

last year, Rey Sanchez, Tony Clark, Brian Daubach, Rickey Henderson, Carlos Baerga, and Cliff Floyd managed to take up 1757 plate appearances (more or less the equivalent of 3 full-time players). for those plate appearances, we got 38 home runs and a 726 OPS (league average OPS, park-adjusted for Fenway, was 750 last year).

this year, we are going to replace those nearly 1800 plate appearances with Todd Walker, David Ortiz, Kevin Millar and Jeremy Giambi. based on their production the last couple of years (and assuming no improvement, although Ortiz and Giambi at least should play better since they are still under 30) they should be good for 65-70 home runs and an 845-855 OPS. this is a GIGANTIC upgrade that people vastly under-appreciate since none of these guys are 'stars'. last year, we used up the equivalent of 3 spots in our batting order for guys that UNDERPERFORMED the AVERAGE player in the league by 3%; this year those 3 spots will on average be filled by guys 10-15% BETTER than average. an upgrade of 100 OPS points at three spots in your order is huge, it should be good for at least 50 and possibly as many as 75 extra runs.

so no, we have not re-animated Teddy Ballgame. but we've done the next best thing.

Cheers
