Seybold's business model for data only services.

Seybold has repeatedly said that he does not see the business model where one makes money at WiFi installations, such as those at Starbucks, since he does not think there will be enough users.

I do not recall that he has ever made said that a data-only business plan based upon EV-DO would not work. With multi-mode phones in a couple of years and NextWave as a wholesaler of data services, the EV-DO service could be build up slowly as the demand developed--starting in the data intense areas. IJ has repeatedly emphasized the capacity issues of speed and that DO only costs 2.3 cents per MB for the operator to deliver. The spectrum constrained carriers, reluctant to clog up their voice with data now, should welcome NextWave's offering of DO.
