GolfInvestor, even if no single chip solution ever exists, I imagine that some genius would be able to create this hypothetical dual mode handset using a dual ASIC design (like analog/CDMA handsets). Expecially since there never needs to be a handoff between the voice side (GSM/CDMA/whatever) and the data side (Flash OFDM/iBurst/whatever).

In my post, I was assuming that such a handset could be made available, IF nextwave had perceived that the benefits of the alternative data-only technologies warranted the R&D. Are you implying that the lack of a single asic multimode solution is the only insurmountable obstacle that prevents Nextwave from selecting alternative technologies with which to offer a data only network? I would hope that EVDO would have something more going for it than merely that!
