"serious consequences" has a specific meaning in diplomatic language--it means military action.

I could cite a number of German commentaries with a very different interpretation.

And the alleged back-stabbing of France: yesterday there was a news piece in German quoting Villepin in «Le Canard Enchainé» who said that a veto would mean "shooting the USA in the back" which would be impossible for France.
