Anthropologically speaking, we tend to laugh at things/issues that we really are uncomfortable to discuss verbally. By laughing at it, the issue becomes a third person's perspective and the burden of dealing with it falls transfers from the individual to the the society as a whole, and theres comfort in numbers....

Far more literary comedies depict slaves being beaten and manhandled than do tragedies. In most literary masterpieces of the formal kind, the slaves are always treated nice. I believe it must have been very uncomfortable for that society to have lived under the guilt of slavery...and so the only way they could have deal with the guilt was with humor....

My, this thread really moves fast....
