re: AIDS in AFRICA:
<Any other candidates for Ideas that might work? >

<Renewed tribalism + a rejection of anything non-African>

These memes are UnFit. They have proven themselves incapable of stopping the spread of AIDS. The response of traditional African cultures to AIDS has been a complete failure. Societies that cling to them, will die. They will die, by people adopting other more Fit memes, or by the physical death of their populations.

<Successful cure of AIDS>

A huge amount of research effort has led to a lot of promising ideas, all leading to dead ends, so far. Even getting a vaccine has proven impossible, as the virus mutates so fast, changing its appearance. And, even if a cure were found, there is the question of whether Africans could afford it, or whether the collapsing infrastructure could deliver it.

<emerging democracy (it is possible).> Anything is possible; some things are highly unlikely. Make a list of the characteristics of nations that become democracies, and almost no African nations have anything on the list.

<Regional hegemony by richer countries with resources>

Maybe, after the present collection of small nations has dissolved further into anarchy.
