Fourteen of the Fifteen Bill of the Goodwill comes from the recently acquired cpq merger. It is the amount hp paid in stock market value, over and above the book value of the tangible assets of cpq. Rather than stepping up the basis of individual tangible assets, the excess amount is credited to the Goodwill account.

Sun may have written down its goodwill for another reason.
