H-P valuation 'compelling' relative to IBM: analyst (HPQ, IBM) By Tomi Kilgore

Analyst Toni Sacconaghi, Jr. at Sanford Bernstein said that Hewlett-Packard's (HPQ) valuation is "compelling" relative to rival IBM (IBM).

He said IBM is strategically better positioned than its fellow Dow industrials component, but it is unclear whether IBM will grow more quickly going forward.

In addition, while expected revenue growth rates for the companies are similar, IBM is trading at a 37 percent premium to H-P based on fiscal 2003 earnings and at a 49 percent premium on expected fiscal 2004 earnings.

H-P is slipping 1.3 percent to $15.35 and IBM is easing 1 percent to $76.97.
