For example, you should understand that it is natural for blacks to support Democrats at this point, because they were at the forefront of civil rights legislation in the '50s and '60s, and because a lot of libertarians and paleocons opine that such legislation was unconstitutional, violating property rights and states rights. As it happens, more blacks agree with social conservatives than any other defined "ideological bloc", but they do not yet trust conservatives not to play into the hands of segregationists. A lot of Jews who might vote for Republicans on the issues will not as long as they are afraid of the Religious Right, and the possibility of American society becoming less tolerant. A lot of working class and lower middle class whites are afraid that Republicans will make policy without regard to its impact on them, and do not understand all of the ins and outs of debate. In general, the Democrats are still the sentimental favorite of minorities and the economically vulnerable, and Republicans need to increase their credibility with these groups......
