I think it was more than the "possible" dissolution of the coalition. Almost no one wants to see the US in control of Iraq. Especially the French, Germans, Russians, Chinese, Iranis, Syrians or OPEC. So they made stopping at or near the Iraq border a cornerstone of the coalition agreements. With a large coalition this time we would have the same problem and what we want very very badly is a democratic Iraq.
