>But for the government to give them paid time off from work for a totally Christian function? Might that not offend some Islamic or Hindu employees? Is that not, in effect, the government shoving Christianity down the throats of people who want to be in their offices, working? I think it is.

Okay, maybe you're right. It is wrong. Let's change it.

Just kidding. I thought Dave was talking about allowing people to take vacation, not shutting down the offices, which is a little more questionable to me.

But I even think that's OK, because if on a few days during the year the government tried to function without half of its employees, it'd probably be a waste of a day.

No. They're practicing their own religion. Nothing wrong with that.

But for the government to give them paid time off from work for a totally Christian function?

No, because XMAS has become a secular holiday......many denominations practice it because they like the concept of Santa Claus and presents. In modern day America, its very easy to separate the secular part of XMAS from the religious part.
