News: DaimlerChrysler: Over 500,000 Fuel Cell Cars Worldwide by 2010

Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) - March 20, 2003

Stuttgart (dpa) - More than half a million cars in the world will be powered by fuel cells by the year 2010, a top DaimlerChrysler executive predicted Thursday, while calling for greater cooperation among carmakers in future technology efforts.

"It would be a breakthrough if we succeeded having that many cars on the roads in 2010," said company executive Thomas Weber. He said DaimlerChrysler is to invest one billion euros (1.06 billion dollars) in the fuel cell technology.

Weber, head of DaimlerChrysler's research and development, said that greater cooperation among carmakers is needed. Half a million exhaust-free fuel cell powered cars would mean about one per cent of the number of new cars registered each year.

But he also called for further refinements in internal combustion engines in order to cut fuel consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Weber said that at six billion euros annually, DaimlerChrysler had the highest R&D budget of any German company.
