British proposes UNSC resolution with a March 17 deadline for Saddam to fully comply with 1441.

Sounds like the Canadian resolution with a compromise date.

New UN Resolution Would Give Iraq March 17 Deadline
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Friday presented a revised draft resolution giving Iraqi leader President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) an ultimatum to disarm by March 17 or face the possibility of war.

Straw distributed the new text, backed by the United States and Spain, after his speech to the Security Council and said it would be introduced shortly.

"I am asking the (U.N.) secretariat to circulate an amendment we are tabling (introducing) which will specify a further period beyond the adoption of a resolution for Iraq (news - web sites) to take the final opportunity to disarm and to bring themselves into compliance," Straw said.

The March 17 date puts pressure on the council to adopt the resolution as soon as possible. The United States and Britain intend to bring the issue to a vote next week.

The purpose of the extension is to gain support from undecided members of the 15-nation Security Council who have grave misgivings about voting for immediate warfare. The new draft would order Iraq to give to inspectors "all weapons, delivery, support systems and structures" prohibited under U.N. resolutions as well as all "information regarding the destruction of such items."
