>Oil is a commodity. Where you draw it out of the ground has absolutely nothing to do with its price.

Sure, it's a commodity, but it's also a limited resource. The more available to be pumped and the less risk of running out, the cheaper it is.

>When someone suggests that "oil" is a reason for our engagement of Iraq, it is an instant clue that the speaker has no idea what he is talking about.

Wrong. It seems to me, it's a reason, but far from the main one.

You obviously have no understanding of how fungible commodity markets work or you would recognize that the existence of that oil is of absolutely zero consequence to the United States.

Some right winger made up this argument and you repeat it like its the gospel. If we control the selling of the Iraqi oil, then we could, if we so choose, make a whole shitload of $$$......and it doesn't matter how fungible it is or is not.

That's the bottom line.

Iraq's oil isn't that important right now (except that it enabled Iraq to fund the WMD program in the first place) but the fact that Iraq sits in the middle of the biggest oil producing region in the world is. It is (partially) about oil, but most of the people who say "its about oil" are trying to imply that it is about an attempt to grab Iraq's oil which it is not.
