Just relax. They're not REALLY hiding under your bed. You just have a little mental problem...

OK, I read it carefully.

Here is my understanding of your argument: there are enough laws in place already so that proper administration of those laws, such as detaining people at our borders, policing immigrants to ensure they were legally in this country, and beefing up security around public transportation would have prevented Sept. 11th, and that the institution of new laws that will identify citizens through the use of modern security devices poses a very real threat to the personal liberty of said citizens and should not be not be abused, especially considering the citizen's religious beliefs.

Your problem is that you are arguing on both sides of the same argument, Sidney. You have failed to take the most important aspect of the debate into consideration. The most important aspect of all of this is the preservation of the Constitution and the parts of it that cover your personal civil rights as a dissenter of whatever faith is calling for your dissent. All of your concerns rest on that one fact. Therefore, you must, as a prerequisite for a solid argument on either side of the debate, look at the structure, or perhaps you could use the "forum" that you are debating all of this in.

Your position boils down to "It's OK if a lot of bad things happen as long as they are not the United States, and as long as some dictator or some homicidal religious zealot from some foreign land doesn't bother me here at home and doesn't do something that will trigger some crazy response from my government that involves me losing my civil liberties. If it doesn't happen like that, I object."

That's just silly, Sidney. I say again that you have the good guys and the bad guys confused. You can vote. You can dissent. You can publish just about any conspiracy theory you want about the horrible things that lie ahead for your country. You should be happy about that, not sad. Don't worry, nothing bad is going to happen. The United States is going to completely handle the actual threat to your civil liberties, and you get to sit back and watch it on TV. You won't get IDed or anything. You will not have to look down the wrong end of a rifle, nobody will throw any grenades at you, nobody will break your door down, rape your wife and daughter, and then slit your throat in front of them. Nobody will release any poison gas on your street, nobody is going to arrest you for complaining.

You have some friends that are going to handle the problem for you.

Relax, everything is going to be fine.
