Good article.

They wrongly perceive that to have such a debate is in itself a sign of division and disunity, and they think their constituents expect them to act as a rubber stamp for the imperial authority of the wartime President. They want to maintain a united front. There is a confusing mixture of sudden paranoia along with an intoxicating sense of American military invulnerability leading to a "Might Makes Right" nostalgia. They see the honor of America as being threatened and do not want to convey a perception of weakness or indecisiveness. They have forgotten their true function in a democracy.
