There are reports that PAS will begin massive rollout in Beijing later this month and Shanghai will likely follow suit, but Wu labeled it as for testing purposes not commercial service. However, many believe it is only a matter of time before PAS makes its way to the "last line of defense" because the market wants low- cost service. ========== Why would vanilla, Japanese-style PAS require testing? What new (to China) technology might Telecom roll out? LOL! ========= Unicom said it will introduce its "Color e" MMS in early April. The much anticipated service will run on CDMA2000 1X networks. According to Unicom, "Color e" will make Internet and handset in one by enabling customers to send and retrieve text messages, color pics and even video clips between handsets with e-mail box as an option. ========== Chinese handsets will likely break 50% in market share this year as they continue to improve in quality, features and style; they have already won the battle with competitive pricing. The prediction can make companies like Motorola and Nokia very uncomfortable whose business in China is almost entirely about handsets. Analysts say rising shares by Chinese brands derive from success in "peripheral markets." In fact, it is not entirely unconceivable that Chinese handsets will someday push out foreign products entirely, and the day can be a lot sooner to come. (Remember consumer electronics market in the 1990s?) ========== Yang Xianzu, Unicom chairman, said he will soon retire but did not give specific time. Yang became Unicom top brass in 1997 and effectively ended the turbulent situation at the company. Previously, a report said Wang Xiaochu, China Mobile (HK) CEO will become a director at Unicom, it is not clear if Wang will replace Yang. Yang also said the goal for CDMA customers this year will be accomplished, not by heavy subsidy of handsets, but services. ==========
