There was an article out a few weeks ago in the local paper saying resale prices were the lowest they had been in five years and that took into account condition of the vehicles. We bought our last Honda for less than the one before (which we considered a good price, well below the sticker after bickering about the price)........ same model, same color, more features and 4 years newer. Go figure. Don't remember what time of the month we bought (could be the end, but don't remember). Last one was in the month of February so I'm pretty sure it wasn't year end dealmaking involved. We saved competitor loss leader ads for a couple months and went in with the lowest ad to several local dealers and told them that was the price we wanted and expected to get a few things thrown in. Pretty much got each dealer to laugh at us and get upset (what? This ad is a few weeks old! It's in a different county! They won't have it! Blah, blah, blah, blah). Walked out of the first two dealers pretty fast, thinking we might be asking too much. Third one finally gave in after lots of bickering. My response was the same each time... You are closer to me than this dealer. You either beat it or I'll go there and see if they want to sell a car tonight. Oh..... they'll NEVER give it to you! Well.... I'm not totally set on a honda. Toyota might be willing to negotiate. And if I can't get a car tonight I'll see what I can find on the internet. Thanks for your time. Um.... internet? Oh, btw.... is it the same for cash or financing? You're willing to finance it (3 years ago.... not sure how much financing was but not 0% for sure)? Well..... is it the same price? What are you trading in? Nothing. Why? Does it affect the price of the new car? Cuz it shouldn't matter how much something costs, right? Oh jeez! Let me ask my manager! Let him know that is the top price we are willing to pay and we want these things thrown in too even though they are not in the ad. We know your cost isn't that high on them and you have a sure sale if we can agree on the price right now. Otherwise we need to go. It's a waste of both of our time and yours to go on if you can't sell that particular car with these extra items for that price. Finally after going back and forth a few times with "the manager" (I hate buying a car).... yeah you can get that **&&*( price and those features. Let's just write it up! Course now the place is closed over half an hour and they want to leave, probably upset I took their time from someone else on a Friday night. Um.... I decided to pay cash. Same price right? WHAT?????????? YOU ARE PAYING CASH??????? Yeah... you said it was the same price. That's ok, right? OMG! Now we don't even make money on the financing? I thought you said it was the same price. Poor salesman looks at my husband and says..... I see why your wife is the one negotiating. He tells him......... oh..... you should see what a deal she got on her business equipment! I'm only here to pick the color. LOL! That's how I buy a car. Not sure it's the lowest price possible, but can't be far from it.
