Mobile Focus: Demand for Wireless Services Expected to Increase

streamingmagazine.com

Multimedia and streaming are being added to mobile phones. Wireless services are a business target for streaming media companies. Streaming Magazine is providing coverage on streaming phones, applications and general statistics.

Among the largest carriers, Vodafone and Verizon Wireless are aggressively pursuing data services. "Both have large subscriber bases but relatively low data penetration rates," comments Probe analyst David Chamberlain. However, some carriers feel that demand for wireless services has continued to fall short of expectations and even plan to reduce the emphasis on the wireless Internet because customers have not yet shown sufficient interest.

While Chamberlain acknowledges the shortfall of demand to date, he is confident that demand will significantly increase this year forward. "The high percentage of prepaid customers was limiting the number of potential wireless Internet subscribers. However, billing systems that permit prepaid users to access wireless data offerings and a strong trend toward increasing the percentage of contract customers are rapidly increasing the total addressable market for wireless Internet in Western Europe.

"According to Probe analyst David Chamberlain, most of the subscriber growth through 2003 will be on CDMA networks. After that, however, he suggests the diverse GSM/GPRS/EDGE/W-CDMA technology components should mature and those carriers will start loading commercial subscribers in earnest.
