The most cost effective thing for both oil and auto companies is to just continue to sell what has already been developed as long as possible. They do not have to worry about a new company duplicating the infrastructure of car dealerships or gas stations, it's just too expensive. That does not make it in the national interest, it just shows why this massive industry will not change on it's own until the oil has run dry and they have no choice.

That's not the issue - the problem is the cheapest form of Hydrogen is produced from oil.
