That may not be quite true. They have the cash flow to develop practical alternative resources. There's a lot of money in developing such patents.

<The only reason the oil companies are in the alternative energy business is to make sure it doesn't come about too quickly. >

False. It's simply that oil is cheaper than anything else. It's true to say though, that they lack imagination and tend to favour the status quo [like all businesses and governments]. But that's the usual simple stupidity, laziness, fear and 'too busy anyway', not conspiratorial malevolence.

Mqurice [ex BP Oil alternative fuels developer and promoter]

PS: I had fun once getting a service station attendant to put half a litre of water in the fuel tank, telling him it ran on water. It really ran on methanol, which the tank was full of [water and methanol mix well] and I'd really just wanted the 1 litre petrol [gasoline] tank in the bonnet [hood] filled, which was just to get it started and warmed up, which I told the guy. He was raving to the cashier that "It DOES run on water! I poured it in myself!!"

That's probably where the rumours of cars that run on water come from. "The oil industry buys the plans and buries them". Hahahaah!!!
