Quebec would never consent to giving up Montreal, that would be like Ireland without Dublin, or Israel without Jerusalem. So, the English-speaking population would be made unwelcome (in various subtle and maybe not-so-subtle ways), and they would gradually emigrate.

Quebec separation. This is among the dopiest ideas ever spawned by ideologues.

The Quebec separatists are, for the most part, socialists who desire to turn Quebec into Cuba-with-hydro.

Canada is not interested in giving these people a good deal on separation. A majority of the population in the Western part of Quebec is not/will not be in favour of separation. That includes Montreal.

You have it backwards. Canada is not willing to give up Montreal which is a cosmopolitan city holding values mostly alien to those held by the separatists who are insular in their attitudes.

Some Quebec voters who aren't separatists are a sophisticated lot who will vote in a "separatist" government because it will bargain ruthlessly with the national government on various issues such as revenue sharing but, in the end, they will not go for a state outside Canada. Too much to lose.
