You should never confuse market speculation with the underlying economy. Clinton produced a growing economy based on international trade and maximizing employment opportunities. Market speculation fourished among the great profits. George Jr. switched to the economy to a protected, nearly tradeless economy based on resource exploitation. It's not just the stock market that collapsed, but the underlying exchange of goods which was the economy.
