Well, for one thing they could have acted more shocked that airliners were falling out of the sky. Instead, they just continued doing what they were doing. They could have shown more leadership. How in gods name could the head of the Joints Chiefs of Staff General Myers continue a meeting throughout the 9/11 events?!? Doesn't that ring rather odd to you? Isn't his job to defend our country, yet he just continued meeting with Senator Max Cleland throughout the entire event? That is the one thing that really seems odd to me. Also, the fact that when Bush was informed that a plane had hit the WTC (I know he didn't know it was a terrorist attack at that point) he reacted like he was being given the score of the Knicks game. No shock that the biggest building in America had been struck by a plane, no spontaneous questions regarding the situation. And, no rush for the exit to ensure the President's safety and to put him in a position to cooridinate our defenses. Strange days indeed.

Re: Shooting down the 3rd and 4th plane.

Perhaps they wouldn't have had time to shoot down the 2nd plane that hit the south tower of the WTC. But, think of all of the lives that would have saved.

But, certainly shooting down the 3rd and 4th planes, while a very hard decision to make on an ethical level, would have been the right thing to do in order to ensure the safety of people on the ground. I know it's hard to imagine, but it would have ultimately saved lives on the ground and sent a message to would-be hijackers that we can defend ourselves and are willing to take extreme measures to do so. The passengers are going to die either way. Even if the passengers had been able to gain control of the plane over Pennsy, do you really think they would have been able to fly and land it safely?
