It doesn't matter whether we recognized the Taliban as the official government of Afghanistan.

It's not a matter of whether or not "we" recognized the Taliban. Nobody did, save Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and IIRC Yemen. Not even the UN recognized the Taliban, which voted annually to renew the Rabbani government's certification as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.

As far as the international community was concerned, they were a gang of brigands.
