Need, in itself, is not a negative definition

I agree, and I was trying mightily to make a distinction between need and being needy, which I do think is pejorative. We need air and water to live. Nothing pejorative about that. We need exercise and intellectual stimulation and social interaction. Nothing pejorative about that, either. I would not describe that as needy. OTOH, people who can't get through the day without hanging all over others have the kind of neediness that warrants pity, not admiration or even neutrality, IMO. That's not what I had in mind when I said "need." Perhaps I should have said "have use for." Utility is more neutral sounding and less likely to push any hot buttons.

Anyway, as someone who is in that category of folks the author wanted studied, I just offered my opinion that we simply have no use for religion and find it more productive or satisfying to spend our Sunday mornings (or Saturdays or Fridays for the non-Christian religious among us) in other endeavors. I will have a lovely long swim tomorrow morning. Now, that's something that does my soul good. <g>
