Germany WCDMA handset set to sell for EUR300
March 7, 2003

The German mobile operator Vodafone D2 is to charge roughly EUR300 (£195) for a WCDMA 3G mobile handset with a contract.

Without a contract, the handset will cost around EUR1000 (£646). The company wants to have begun its roll-out of full 3G services by the end of June 2003, and to have reached 25 per cent coverage by the end of the year.

Vodafone will demonstrate its UMTS systems at the Cebit trade fair in Hanover later this month. This will be followed by a launch to an unspecified number of corporate clients before the end of June.

The company says that this 'soft' launch of business 3G services will not be accompanied by a large marketing campaign, and is being seen as more of a trial introduction in the run-up to a full commercial release, which is still scheduled for the second half of this year.
