Magueijo, Joao, Lecturer, Imperial College, Physics

Dr. Magueijo talked about his book, Faster Than the Speed of Light: The Story of a Scientific Speculation,
published by Perseus Publishing. In it, he argues that Einstein’s theory of special relativity is incorrect, and proposes
the Variant Speed of Light theory. He argues that during the first second after the Big Bang, light travelled faster than
186,000 miles per second. This, he says, is the key to understanding many of the puzzles facing cosmology today.
Professor Magueijo explains the theory of relativity, lays out the problems that are created by holding to the idea that
the speed of light is constant, and provides evidence for a varying speed of light (VSL). Following prepared remarks,
he responded to questions from the audience.
