>> They would no longer need bombs, they’d have the court system. I don’t think a lot of Israelis would find that very congenial.<<

Oh, no, Israelis much prefer being blown apart by bombs.

I mean, the Palestinian case is so overwhelming, both factually and legally, that it's far better to allow one's children to be destroyed by nail bombs than actually face them in court.

Israel as 51st State:

<I can’t think of one good reason why Americans would want it>

1. It gives America the leverage and control to make and keep an Israili-Arab peace.
2. The NeoCons have been talking about making Iraq into a beachhead, the First Domino, for introducing (that's the polite term) Western secular democracy to the Middle East. But Iraq is poor material to start with, for this project. Think pigs and sow's ears. Israel is the obvious candidate for this. Other than being the wrong religion, they are perfect.
3. So that's just a stepping-stone. Adding Israel to the U.S., would be accompanied by the creation of a Palestinian State. Jordan would become a de facto American protectorate, as Canada is. We could probably get Syria out of Lebanon, in return for giving back the Golan (and politely threatening ShockAndAwe as the alternative).
4. So the Next Dominoes, the ones that serve as the real Alternatives to Islamism, are Jordan, Lebanon, and the Palestinian State. Sign mutual defense pacts with them, free trade agreements. $5-10B/Y in development aid, a New Marshall Plan, which would be an order of magnitude cheaper than each Regime Change the U.S. Army does.
5. Here's how a peaceful Palestinian State is quickly done:
A. Set up the State, with all the territory offered at Taba. The Constitution of this State, will have explicit provisions for de-militarization, acceptance of a Jewish State, and commitment to the peaceful resolution of all current and future conflicts.
B. remove all Israeli troops, and replace them with Canadians, Germans, Japanese soldiers, under a UN umbrella.
C. Then, go to every adult male who lives in that State (during the interim period where the U.S. retains civil control), and make them sign a pledge, to be loyal to the new State, and obey the Constitution.
D. Citizenship in the Palestinian State, is dependant on signing that pledge. Each adult male, is personally responsible for the behavior of his family members.
E. Anyone who doesn't sign the pledge, or is later found in non-compliance, is taken to the border (with his family) and expelled. The Palestinian Diaspora could Return to the new Palestinian State (not Israel), if they sign the pledge.
F. I have no idea how this changes the demographics. If we do it right, I suspect we would need to expel a few tens of thousand only, and more than that would Return. So there would be an exchange of populations, with all those willing to accept the Jewish State living (in peace, with a steadily rising standard of living) in the Palestinian State, and the Rejectionists living in squalor in refugee camps outside Damascus. We should try very hard to emphasize that dichotomy, that contrast.
