Religious Right Ready for War

Americans who identify with the religious right are most likely to favor military action in Iraq, a Gallup poll found.

Seventy percent of adults who identified themselves as members of the religious right said they favored military action; 56 percent of respondents who did not identify themselves with the religious right said they did.

Among people who identified themselves as religious but not as part of the religious right, at least 60 percent supported military action: 64 percent of those who said they were born again or evangelical; 63 percent of those who attend church almost every week; and 62 percent of those who said religion was "fairly important" spoke in favor of such action.

Among all 1,002 respondents in the national poll, taken Feb. 17-19, 59 percent were in favor of military action, and 38 percent were opposed.
