<the good life in a Mental Hospital> I've spent time in a mental hospital. Also spent time in a facility that was a combination hospital and prison. In a "mental" hospital, there are all the locked doors, rigidly enforced routines, and guards that a prison has. In addition, there is a group of people (mental health professionals) who, if they don't like how you're acting, can order you "restrained" with various leather-and-metal appliances. They watch you, 24/7, and take notes. They can also inject various drugs into your body (there are many to choose from, more every year), many of which have unpleasant side effects. The level of control that doctors have over patients in a "mental" hospital, is greater, much greater, than what guards can do in a prison. Nobody who has spent any time there, in any capacity, would describe it as "the good life".
