To: unclewest who wrote (80799 ) 3/9/2003 9:12:28 PM From: marcos Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 281500 It is beyond barbarity to waste a fine wine, other than a little splash for good luck ... perhaps some other frenchmen are being dickheads somewhere, hey it's not that small a country, such things likely go on all the time, however when the vintner has applied his craft well he has placed his own essence in the wine, it has nothing whatsoever to do with dickheadery in other disciplines, wouldn't matter if his name were Jock Sheerack ... man, i don't see how people can't understand the folly of such a course - far better to savour the wine, appreciate it fully, rejoice in the peak of human achievement that created it, then throw the bottle at the bugger I know a frenchman who was raised by his grandfather in the Val de Loire, he recalls as a child of five or so seeing a german officer come into the house, demand food, sit down at the kitchen table and place his pistol close to hand, as a subtle message, he was quite friendly otherwise, somewhat tired though .... this was in the retreat, summer of '44 ... later my friend was in the foreign legion in Algeria as an engineer, he had charge of among other things a lowbed and a D7 cat, his job was to clear roads and streets following bombing or battle damage, he recalls seeing wounded in the rubble being bulldozed to the side, stopping for a few seconds each time to see if the person could be saved, if not then it was allez-vous, clear that road Millions of poilus died right beside the canadians all through the '14-'18 war ... there is a story of the taxis of Paris saving the city by stopping the germans at the Marne, it is interesting ..... quite misguided imho to finger the french for all time as cowardly, in order to advance some bushista policy du jour .... that being said i do think their politicians are being dickheads to an extent, endangering international institutions by being pig-headed ... the other side of that though, is what choice do they have, what choice do any of us have, outside of submitting to the dictates of one tiny group of men from one single national capital What structure does the security council of a UN-like organisation need to be more reasonable and effective? ... having five vetos doesn't seem to be working well - maybe there should be no veto? .... this is the challenge, to set up a system that works better, where no single nation can substantially impede or dictate the progress ... it won't be easy, it can't be with so many human beings involved, but still, what choice do we have
