I was referring to Friedman, not Bush. I think Bush is committed, but hates having to do it.

Henry Kissinger said the other night words to the effect of, "The fundamental nature of our relationship with France, Germany, NATO and the UN is undergoing fundamental change". When Kissinger makes a statement like this, it is serious.

My sense is that there is much more happening here than just France & Germany opposing the war. I think they're concerned about there now being only one superpower and they are, somewhat arbitrarily, just trying to balance us. They may well have disagreed regardless of the justification for the war. They're like a couple of teenagers trying to assert their independence.
