looks like Powell may be influencing the French position.

By making them "put up or shut up," Bush and Powell are creating some interesting dynamics. Here are the possible outcomes, and what the local reaction from our carping critics will be. You and I have been around here long enough to be able to write their posts for them.

1) Only 4 countries join us, the rest vote against us.

"Oh, this is terrible! The whole world is against us, we can't possibly go to war with Saddam now, blah, blah ,blah,"

2) We get nine votes, France Vetoes.

"Oh, this is terrible! Bush bought the votes of these countries, but the French had the courage to stand up to him, we can't go to war now, we don't have a resolution, blah, blah, blah."

3) We get 15 votes.

"Oh, this is terrible! Bush bought the votes of these countries, the French and the Germans were forced into this, Blah, blah, blah."

4) The World ends. The good news is God is a nice guy, and everybody goes to Heaven. The bad news is that Bush and the Administration get to lead the American procession though the Pearly Gates.

"Oh, this is terrible! Why is Bush out front? We have all these women and minorities in the back who should be up there! Blah, blah, blah.
