What amazes me is that people use the argument that "there is a potential danger of a terrorist smuggling a nuke into US and keep the whole country hostage" as an argument for war and superiority complex. This is in fact an argument for peace and establishment of a more compassionate world.

The history of the world shows that no matter what you do, top grade weapons will proliferate anyway. In the past 200 years the West has managed to maintain superiority because of developing more and more destructive weapons to stand against the proliferated weapons (think along the lines of indians had no horses, we had Calvary, when they got horses, we had guns, when they had guns, we had machine guns, and so on). But now that road has come to an end. The top of the line nuke is not more useful than your run of the mill 20 year old nuke. And there is nothing Bush or any other president can do to prevent proliferation of 50 year old technology.

This is why we need a paradigm shift while we still have the time. The only thing that can prevent the dark possibility of a major WMD going off inside US is the establishment of international institutions which uphold the law and transform the globe from a free for all jungle into a civilized place. This means that the rules must be clear and that the weak countries must feel safe that when their interests and US' interests clash, there will be a fair resolution and America will not just get away with whatever it wants.

I know that this is a hard pill to swallow for many who believe we should do whatever it takes to maintain superiority. They would feel that such an approach will destroy US. But the reality is otherwise. The world is getting smaller and smaller. What happens in one part directly affects many other parts. If it was possible to conquer and control the world, at least one of the great empires of the past would have been still around. So just as each society has come to the conclusion that might and self-interest is no excuse for beating others into submission, we have no choice but to conclude a civilized and compassionate globe is in the best interest of everyone including America.

Now if Bush could understand and implement this, then America would indeed be on the list of countries that were way ahead of their time and contributed greatly to humanity. This would be a move as great as Cyrus declaring that despite his position as the King of Kings, he is still one of the common people and subject to the law of the land.

PS the world is headed in the direction of law and equality regardless of whether we want it or not. Either the leadership in America will see that and help speed that process in a friendly way, or some day everyone will pay a horrible price for resisting the evolution.
