According to WorldTel chairman and chief executive officer Sam Pitroda the use of Telematics solutions in sectors like transportation could present a significant opportunity to build in efficacy particularly in the public transportation sector. Addressing, the Tele Trans 2003 seminar on telematics via a video-conference link from Chicago, Mr Pitroda called for a new wave of revolution by infusing telematics into railways to plug the leak in revenue besides improving amenities to passengers. "Telematics usage in India could be a great way to modernise the transportation sector and also upgrade people’s skills. All employees need to be taken into confidence when using such technology and this efficient interface between technology and people could be the tool for improvement, earning more revenues and providing communication," he said. He also called for the appointment of a champion and brand ambassador for the use of such technologies in India, who would work towards reducing the delays in legislation in order to enable quicker technology upgradation and adoption in key sectors. Mr Pitroda also urged the Indian software industry and the chip designers to take up the opportunity in providing software services in the telematics areas particularly for the automobile sector. Low cost telematics for the three-wheeler sectors to resolve key issues, such as tracking and payment modes, could vastly improve the efficiency of autorickshaws which have emerged a key cheap public transport in the country, industry spokesperson said. For India particularly vehicle navigation, entertainment, fleet tracking etc have been identified an key areas for Telematics work/penetration.
