I don't think this is a useful criteria or measurement. Hopefully, good works which benefit the world will also be in the self-interest of the contributor. Free market economics promotes that a nation with a higher standard of living provides a better market.

I would submit that the fall of the Soviet Union was brought about, in large part, by the steadfast resistance of the US. Obviously, that resistance wasn't non-violent and included misguided criminal behavior directly or as an accomplice. I believe the benefit to the world at large vastly outweighed the detriment caused by our mistakes and failures. I think the futures for many countries are brighter now than they have ever been. US technological innovation and an economic system that distributes wealth by seeking to "exploit" the lowest cost resources have improved the economic prospects for many nations.
